PROLOGUE
Shatter split up and rolled herself down the flight of stairs inside the tall human building where she had made her home.
The orbs that made up her body bounced down each flight of steps and she felt every impact and was glad that her crystal body felt no pain.
It was not the most dignified way for her to escape her pursuers, but it was her only choice.
A net of pure energy shot down from above her and ensnared ball 5 of her body.
Ball 1, her head, stopped rolling and looked at the trapped ball.
She heard a young human shout out, “I GOT A PIECE OF HER!”
She cursed the young male and continued to roll the rest of her body parts down the stairs, for now she would just have to be a little shorter.
“SHE’S GETTING AWAY,” cried out a young female. As her head rolled, Shatter caught a glimpse of the girl and two male humans looking down the gaps between the stairs and pointing at her.
She recognised one of the humans; he had helped her escape from the Guard Robot’s prison ship. When she had met Glayciar, Kutterwood and Durst, they had told her how reliable he had been to their schemes, now it seemed he was no longer being helpful.
Her body picked up speed as the momentum of her fall swiftly carried her body parts down the steps towards the ground floor of the building she was in.
She knew they would never catch her, but they weren’t the problem. Her experiment had been ruined and now she would have to start all over again.
Was it too much to ask that she be left alone to continue her experiments? She thought.
She reached the bottom of the stairs and rolled out into the lobby of the building.
A human screamed as she swept by and directed the orbs of her body towards the exit to the building. Her seven remaining orbs smashed through the glass doors and windows and rolled into the grounds of the building.
There was only one means of escape now, unfortunately she had lost her teleporter as it was in the body segment the humans now had.
She rolled towards her back up escape route, one she had scouted just in case the Robot had come for her. She never expected human children to do so instead.
“She’s going for the water drain,” one of the humans said.
Curses, Shatter thought, these are clever humans.
Thankfully though it wasn’t a problem, she was way ahead and one by one she dumped her body parts down the drain and into the sewers of the city.
Her head was the last to go and she barely avoided being hit by another net shot at her from the spear. Her head dropped down a pipe to freedom.
Now she was angry she had been so close to completing her experiments and now she had lost her test subjects.
Then she had a brain wave. She knew exactly who the next test subjects should be. And if she got her hands on them, then maybe her experiments without interruption.
That would mean of course that the human race would never be the
same again.
A price Shatter was willing to pay.
